These are great. I have a general question to ask you San Guy. I want to study for E20-522 and I am not sure what the best stuff would be to study. Any recommendations? Manuals, white papers, etc? Thanks!

THis one is realy useful
COuld you please tell me why sometimes auto registeration fails on VMWare ESX server to the CLariion

san guy said...

as far as i am aware, vmware is not able to auto-register the hba's to the clariion. there are only 2 ways in which i know it can be done...a navipshere host agent, and the windows navisphere server utility...

i am not sure if vmware has an agent do to the has been my understanding that they have to be manually registered...

Nope, VMware ESX can auto-register the HBA's to the Clariion. All my ESX servers were registered this way.

1. Download Navisphere Host Agent / CLI from EMC Powerlink.

2. Extract and run ./linux/ to open required ports.

3. Install or upgrade the RPM (naviagentcli.noarch.rpm)

4. Start or restart the service service naviagent start

5. Go to Navisphere Control Center and update the host and make sure it reflect the same agent version. Might take a minute or two.

San Guy, now I have a real basic question as I am still fairly new with the Clariion SAN's.

How are you connecting to the SAN to run these commands? Are you using EMC Remote, SSH Client, etc?

I also wanted to say that I've posted here before and the information you provide is invaluable. It's helped me grow professionally during a time when our SAN administrator left and I was asked to fill the gap -- Thank you!

One last thing, Anonymous, if you've already done the ESX install you might need to check the naviagent run level and start up; #chkconfig --list.

To enable the service for runlevel 3 you need to run #chkconfig naviagent on. Then run #chkconfig --list naviagent and you should see: naviagent 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:off 6:off

Hope this helps.

I extended a disk using a metalun through navisphere. The disk was never extended on the server that needed the disk space. I would like to reclaim that 200 GB that I allocated to that LUN. Since, it was never extended on the server that uses the lun, I should be able to unbind the metalun without affecting the original lun? Ture or False. I need help.

san guy said...

Sorry, but that disk space that was allocated to the MetaLUN is gone off the the MetaLUN world forever. There is no way to reclaim LUNs from a MetaLUN.

Hello, I have CX380 with multiple RAID 5 groups (each of 5 disks) but I am hitting performance issues. On server, with iostat, most of the luns are 100% busy most of the time. Where do I start looking into ? I know it is very generic but....
